Programs
For preschoolers, my presentation will start with reading and singing my book "Over on the Island" . Children
will be introduced to 10 Hawaiian animals, using puppets. This will be followed by hands-on art activity involving mixing
paints and making a ocean friend. This works well in groups of less than 20 children, and takes about 30 minutes.
For grades
K to 2, I have two programs.
A. I will read my book "Little hawaiian Rainbow". I've scanned the pages and can project the art
in powerpoint as I read the story, so that all children can see the pictures. I will add a small powerpoint presentation
about how a book was made. If time allows, the session will end with Q & A. This session will take about 45
minutes, and works well as class or grade presentation, and can be interactive for smaller groups.
B. I will read my book "Over on
the Island". Students can sing along as I read showing the pages in powerpoint. This will be followed by art activity
involving paper-collage and painting which is the technique I used to make "Over on the Island". This session will take about
45 - 60 minutes, and works well as a class presentation, and can be interactive for smaller groups.
For grade 3 and up, a
book reading will be followed by my powerpoint presentation "How is a picture book made?"; explaining about process
of children's book publishing, especially illustrating. I will tour my studio, show materials and equipment. Students
will learn how a book is illustrated from manuscript to final art. The session will end with Q & A. This
presentation is 45 - 60 minutes, and works well as class or grade presentaion, and can be interactive for smaller groups.
For
International Schools, I can weave Hawaiian animal and culture into the program on request.
My art workshops for grades K and up will sum up my school visit
for a day.
I will read or share either
my book or other children's book which
contains a technique or the subject students will explore in art project.
All art materials
and supplies will be provided. Young artist will
explore painting, drawing, mixed-media and more.
This is a good
way for children to connect literacy and art.
Art workshop (K - 2), (3 - 6) 60 minutes
Preparation
I
have a list of my children's books that teachers can order and make available in the classroom or library in advance, in case
my books are not available in your area. I believe the more the students are familiar with my books, the more they'll enjoy
and benefit from my visit. Please feel free to ask me for a list.
My books are also available at Amazon.com.
